- Senator Bong Go insists he won’t run for President in 2022 national elections
- PRRD may decide to run for VP without a running mate
- Go stated that he is more inclined to serve the Filipino people until the country and its people have overcome the pandemic
Senator Christopher “Bong” Go refused to run for President in the May 2022 national and local elections, despite calls from his party colleagues to do so.
In an interview, Go stated that while he is grateful for the (PDP-Laban) Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan’s trust and confidence in him when it’s National Executive Committee endorsed him as President Duterte’s running mate for 2022 elections, he is already satisfied serving the Filipino people as a senator.
When asked about his plans for 2022 elections, Go said, “I am deeply honored by the trust and confidence of the members of PDP-Laban National Executive Committee in my capability to run for presidency in the coming 2022 elections.”
It’s a great personal honor for me. But, as much as I wish to respond to the clamor of many of my party mates, I most respectfully decline the said endorsement,” he added.
Go expressed his gratitude in a letter dated August 30 to party president and Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi for the “trust and confidence” in him to be endorsed as a presidential candidate and to run as a vice-presidential candidate alongside President Duterte. Go, on the other hand, has stated politely that he declines the endorsement.
Cusi responded to Go in a letter later that day, saying that the National Executive Committee understands his decision. But they remain committed to endorsing him as the PDP-Laban presidential candidate.
Cusi went on to say that Go is “the best candidate to work alongside President Duterte” and that the two are “the best pair to lead our country forward.”
Despite his party mate’s unwavering support, Go stated that he is committed to his decision.
Meanwhile, according to Go, Duterte may decide to run for vice president even if he does not have a running mate.
Ibig sabihin, magiging free for all ang kanyang ulo. So desisyon po iyon ng ating mahal na Pangulong Duterte as of today, na tatakbo po siya bilang Bise Presidente,” Bong Go explained.
Bong Go has stated that if Duterte decides to run for vice president, he will back him up. He also expressed his support for a presidential candidate capable of continuing the administration’s progress.
As the country deals with the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, Go stated that he is more inclined to serve the Filipino people. Until the country and its people have overcome the public health emergency.
