Batangas City Tanduay Athletics’ bid for a back-to-back MPBL championship now gone with the wind.
The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League inaugural champion was defeated by Cocolife-backed Davao Occidental Tigers in a Sudden death Game 3 Monday night at the full packed Almendras Gym in Davao City.
The Tigers started strong in the opening quarter and outscored Batangas 16-4. Former PBA player Mark Yee lead his streak with 11 points and 12 rebounds as they clawed their way to earn the right to represent the South Division in the national finals.
Batangas fought back with Jeff Viernes who leads his team with 12 markers, 5 boards, and 5 dimes while Grimaldo chipped in 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 blocks for the Athletics but the Tigers was just too sharp at both ends of the floor and showed its poise towards the end of the ballgame with a 16-6 decisive run that took away the fight out of Batangas.
Final score 66-51 in favor of Davao.
Davao Occidental now advances to the MPBL Datu Cup Finals to face San Juan.
