Twenty students from the first batch of k+12 graduates in Batangas were recently awarded SM Scholarships for school year 2018-2019 by SM foundation Incorporated.

The new batch of scholars, who passed the qualifying exams and interviews for scholarships, are now entitled to enroll in universities or colleges of their choice in their desired courses of study.

Accompanied by their parents and guardians, 8 scholars came from Lipa City and 12 came from Batangas City.

They were welcomed at SM City Lipa and SM City Batangas by the Branch Managers of SM Stores respectively and shared an inspirational message by SM City Batangas Mall Manager Gemina Buenaflor and SM City Lipa Asst. Mall Manager John Mauhay of which they were also briefed on the duties, responsibilities and benefits of being a scholar.

As scholars under the SM College Scholarship Program, they will receive free tuition and miscellaneous school fees and monthly stipend. They will also be given opportunities to work during summer and Christmas breaks in SM malls and Department stores and obtain possible employment under the SM Group of Companies after they graduate.

SM have a total of 500 scholars for school year 2018-2019, 200 from NCR and 300 from the provincial region.

The SM College Scholarship Program started with the vision of SM patriarch Henry Sy, Sr.—to send one child from a less fortunate family to college. After graduation, this child should send one sibling to school and should be able to provide a better future for the family.

Starting with only 100 scholars in 1993, the SM Scholarship Program has produced 3,000 graduates to date. Now in its 25th year, the Foundation continues to provide poor yet deserving students a chance for a better future through higher education.
