VALENTINE’S DAY 2018 IS ASH WEDNESDAY

Valentine’s Day is more than just about chocolates, flowers, and romantic dates this year.

This special day of love also falls on a religious holiday, the Ash Wednesday which marks the first day of Lent, the beginning of the 40 days leading up to Easter Sunday o “Araw ng Pasko ng Pagkabuhay ni Kristo.”

 

Ash Wednesday is considered to be one of the holiest days of the year for Roman Catholics it originated from the ancient Jewish tradition of “penance and fasting”.

According to Catholic beliefs, the ashes given out at church represent the dust from which God has made us.

As such it comes with some rules, Ash Wednesday is a day of prayer and fasting and yes, that means that those who observe it “must not eat meat for the entire day”.

Extremely religious people will sometimes fast for the entire day.

According to Bulldog Catholic, “meat was singled outbecause it is associated with celebrations and feasts.”

Meat was also often considered to be a luxury in ancient times. It was given up to teach Catholics about sacrifice, because Jesus sacrificed himself for the religion.

So if you traditionally observes Ash Wednesday, which happens to be Valentine’s day this 2018, “Bawal kumain ng karne mga kabarako!!”
