Philippine Air Force welcomes a Bell AH-1S Cobra Attack Helicopter

The Armed Forces of the Philippines is yet to witness another upgrade in its firepower, one of the newest member of attack aircraft of the Philippine Air Force is about to be felt on the battlefield.

On 18 November 2021, the Men and Women of the 15th Strike Wing witnessed another significant event in the history of 15SW as they welcomed the AH-1S Cobra at Major Danilo Atienza Air Base (MDAAB), Sangley Point, Cavite City.

The AH-1S Cobra, whom Major Reese James A Obeso PAF piloted, Squadron Commander, 20th Attack Squadron, and Captain Wilmore Kristus A Tañamor PAF, took off from Clark Air Base and performed low passes before making their first touchdown at MDAAB.

After which, the aircraft was blessed by Rev. Father Salcedo Galvan and rendered the traditional Water Cannon Salute. The Ceremonial Champagne Pouring then followed it to mark both the joy and sanctity of the occasion.

IN HIS MESSAGE, the WC,15SW, stated that this day marks another first for the 15SW as it welcomed a dedicated attack helicopter, the AH-1S Cobra. He also thanked all those who worked hard to fully operationalize and hasten the coming home of the AH-1S Cobra.

This platform will complement the MD-520MG of the 20th Attack Squadron and, hopefully, be successfully employed and deliver support to other AFP units. The activity was conducted while properly observing the COVID-19 Health Protocols. (Source: Philippine Air Force)

What is the job of the Philippine Air Force?

The PAF is responsible for the defense of the Philippine airspace, aerial photography, and reconnaissance, close air support to combat forces, development of doctrines and tactics for air operations, participation in national development, and search and rescue operations. (Source:coa.gov.ph)

The PAF is currently involved in three major activities supporting the Philippine Government’s all-out war against terrorism. First is the conduct of air surveillance of Philippine territory, islands, and waters to neutralize any threat coming from the air. The second is conducting airstrikes on terrorist positions when necessary. The third is assisting in the evacuation of civilians, prisoners, wounded/injured soldiers, and foreign nationals who are caught in encounters with the terrorists. The PAF is also preparing its personnel for any contingency that may arise that may require it to revive its wartime function.

Philippine Air Force Under the Revised AFP Modernization Program

The AFP modernization program entails the development and employment of certain capabilities that can address the assessed threats: Provided, That the acquisition of air force, navy, and army equipment and material of such types and quantities shall be made in accordance with the need to develop AFP capabilities.

It aims to modernize all branches of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) such as the Philippine Navy, the Philippine Army, and the Philippine Air Force.
