Barako Auction: And we are not talking about coffee
Just across the back of SM City Lipa, there is an area noticeable due to the pig statues in its front. This is the International Training Center on Pig Husbandry. The only training center in Asia specializing on pig husbandry.
Now what is husbandry? According to Wikipedia, Animal Husbandry is the branch of agriculture concerned with animals that are raised for meat, fibre, milk, eggs, or other products. It includes day-to-day care, selective breeding and the raising of livestock.
A few may only know, but this center caters to thousands of guests from all parts of our country each year.
ITCPH provides classroom instructions coupled with practical classes. With its 7.2-hectare facility, the center gives intensive guidance to large and small scale pig farming practices. It is also well equipped with facilities and modest accommodations for their trainees.
This coming September 20, ITCPH will have the first Boar Auction. In the field of pig farming, boar is known in Batangas as Barako or the male pig.
This auction will also coincide with the launching of their new building the Boar Auction Centrum. According to one ITCPH staff, one boar could sell up to 250,000 pesos depending on its breed.
